THE SHELLFISH NETWORK
The Shellfish Network is the oldest organization in the UK dedicated solely to campaigning to protect shellfish from cruelty. It was founded by Joe Solomon (1933 - 2009) in 1994, and subsequently run for many years by Julie Roxburgh. Our central campaign goal is to extend the protections of the Animal Welfare Act to shellfish.
The term shellfish includes a large range of exoskeleton-bearing aquatic invertebrates, including various species of molluscs, crustaceans, and echinoderms. Perhaps the best known of these animals are the many species of crabs, lobsters and shrimps Did you know that lobsters do not age in the same way as we do. They retain their youthful sprightliness and can regrow limbs even at 100 years old!

BASIC PRINCIPLES
1)Animal Welfare: We believe that ideally shellfish should not be eaten at all. However, if they are to be eaten, they should be killed in as humane a way as possible. There are now methods which take some of the suffering out of slaughter by the use of stunning. These methods should be used rather than the dreadfully cruel methods of the past, such as boiling alive. In spite of this, it is better for both shellfish and humans that these creatures are not killed at all. 2).Environmental: the seas will be dead within a few decades if fishing and the taking of shellfish continues at the same rate as it has been . Shellfish form an important part of the ecosystem. 3) Human Health and Disease: There is no need to catch fish or shellfish for food. Please click on NUTRITION. This page will discuss the dangers of eating shellfish and will show how healthier nutrition can be obtained from plant foods. |
